The Journalist’s Challenge

Join former local journalist and photographer Josie Purcell for an enjoyable challenge of discovering, composing, and designing a front-page story for the ‘Cohort Times’.

Students will learn the principles of what makes a great news story, how to write a press release, how to capture a winning image, and how to layout an eye-catching print edition.

While working in teams, the gathered stories and photographs will be submitted to the editor, Josie, for a final decision regarding the front-page article. Students will then collaborate with Josie to design the front page.

This workshop will offer students a deeper understanding of St Ives and its people, while providing an enjoyable means to support curriculum subjects, such as English as well as art and design.

Newspaper outlets ranging from the Cornishman to The Guardian will be referenced for inspiration.

This workshop will be based at Cohort, with some time dedicated to finding words and photos externally. Students will need access to a camera and a word processor, along with the capability to send their work directly to Josie or via a teacher. Details can be discussed in advance of booking if required.

Duration: 2.5 hours. Due to other commitments this workshop is only available Thursday – Sunday.

£12/student (minimum £240/workshop)
