Shoreline Lumen Printing

Join eco-conscious photographic artist Josie Purcell to create magical lumen prints using materials sourced from the shoreline.

Students will use expired black-and-white photographic paper to create stunning abstract imagery. As they explore natural materials such as rocks, sand, seaweed, and seawater, they will engage in a slow photographic methodology that connects them to the blue spaces of St Ives, while learning to repurpose old art materials as part of an eco-friendly practice.

Since the original lumen prints will gradually darken if not fixed or stored in the dark, students will learn to use free smartphone apps to enhance their work digitally. This workshop emphasises the need for artists to consider the impact of their creative production and aligns with environmental awareness in schools.

Alongside Josie’s artwork, references will be made to artists such as Susan Derges, Meghann Riepenhoff, Maria Medina-Schechter, and Mandy Barker for inspiration and ongoing creativity.

This workshop can run on overcast days but may need to be held undercover during rainy weather.

Duration: 2 hours. Due to other commitments this workshop is only available Thursday – Sunday.
